LEGIONELLA

Legionella bacteria are known to thrive in areas where warm water is present, such as in cooling towers, hot water storage tanks, humidification systems, domestic water systems, as well as lawn irrigation systems. They can also develop in jetted bathtubs, hot tubs, decorative indoor fountains, and even in industrial cooling systems.

CONSULTING AND TRAINING

Our chemists, engineers and technologists have extensive experience in conducting risk assessments for Legionella proliferation in building systems, performing inspections to identify problem areas, carrying out risk management and control, as well communicating effectively.

We apply the method recommended in Standard 188-2015 from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) for managing Legionella in water systems.

Additionally, we develop comprehensive programs to reduce the risks associated with Legionella bacteria and protect the health of occupants, in compliance with the provisions for maintenance of water-cooling towers stipulated by the Safety Code, c. B-1.1, r. 3.

We also offer awareness training, an effective tool for proactive risk management.

Our assessments generally include:

  • Evaluating water maintenance operations in different networks and systems
  • Reviewing plans and drawings of installations and water flow
  • Analyzing and managing risks (identifying sources and susceptible areas of Legionella proliferation)
  • Defining sampling strategies
  • Developing management and maintenance programs, including remedial actions to be taken

LABORATORY ANALYSES

We coordinate water and surface sample analysis to confirm the presence of the Legionella pneumophila species and, if found, its concentration as well as that of its serogroups and any other species of Legionella is determined. We collaborate with independent laboratories that are certified by the Centre d’expertise en analyse environnementale du Québec (CEAEQ) or the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) through their Environmental Legionella Isolation Techniques Evaluation (ELITE) program.
